DIY Tutorials: Cupcake Crayons!

Hey guys! I swear, this is the LAST time I apologize for being a lazy blogger. I fell ill for most of March and have finally got my spring back! I have so many wonderful things planned for April and May. And what better way to kick off April than with a super fun tutorial on how to make your own crayons? I got this idea from a craft kit we carry at The Granville Island Toy Company (called Alex Doodle Cake Crayons).

What you need: * A bunch of crayons! I found Crayola worked best for me, because their wax is a pretty decent quality with a lot of colour pigment. * A fun silicone mould. Mine is shaped like cupcakes, but there are SO many fun molds out there these days from companies like Fred (just type in ice cube tray to see all of their designs) . * A knife, scooper, and cookie sheet.

Step one: Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. While the oven is heating up, starting scraping and chopping your crayons into little bits. Scoop the bits into your silicone mould. Make sure that the mould is heaping, because the wax melts down quite a lot. Don't be scared to mix really crazy colours together!

Step two: Once you've filled all of your moulds, place the mould on a cookie sheet and put in the oven for roughly 8 minutes. Check it after 8 minutes, and if the wax is slightly bubbling on the top, you know they've melted properly. Remove the tray!

Step three: Once the crayons have completely cooled, pop them out of the mould and you should have funky rainbow crayons! If you've used Crayola crayons, there's no need to worry about your silicone mould. Just give it a thorough washing and you'll be able to use it again for ice cubes or what have you. Crayola crayons are totally non-toxic!

Now you have your own awesome batch of creative crayons! This tutorial is great for families to use up their bits of broken crayons. I'm using mine to give away in goody bags at a tea party later this month. They'd work so well for any type of goody bag or celebration. And there are so many wicked moulds out there, you could go crazy with ideas. I want to try making robot shaped ones next!

I hope you guys liked my first tutorial! I'll be posting many more, as well as vegan recipes, throughout all of April. I'd love to see the crayons you come up with as well, so please comment with pictures if you can!

my little factory. :)
Hello! I just wanted to write a short post about what I've been up to. I've been focusing a lot on my new diet (no sugar, no sweeteners, no white flour, etc), which has been taking up quite a bit of my time. It's been an interesting experiment, and I'm happy to say that my health concerns I originally went to the naturopath about have completely been fixed! My detox officially ends on March 24th.
I'm planning a lovely tea party for mid-April to celebrate my first year of living a vegan lifestyle. So very excited for that! I have lots of craft projects to do for that day. I'll photograph everything to share with you guys!

Other than that I've been working hard at the toy store...playing Disney Scene It with my girl friends, making and listing new sweater clips in the shop, going on little road trips to the States, applying for craft markets *fingers crossed*, and rereading my favourite book, "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" by Jonathan Safran Foer. I've also been working on making hollow books, which I may or may not begin selling in my Etsy shop... we shall see! They sure take a long time to do!

Hope you're all doing really well! Take care!

Friday Favorites.

It's Friday and it's time to party! I've been feeling even more mad love for Etsy this week than usual. Here we go!

8x12 Print Red by sandragrafik

I've always been more than fascinated by Little Red Riding Hood, and I love this interpretation.

Conjoined Teeth Ring by charlotteburkhart

Is it just me, or is there something oddly romantic about this ring? I know it may be a bit creepy for some people's tastes, but I adore it! Actually, all of the rings in this shop are entirely beautiful.
Passport Cover Our Solar System by TwoPolkaDots

I've been thinking about getting a little cover for my passport so it won't get bent. I like this solar system one a lot!
Parrot Green Brook Earrings by botny.

I've been seeing earrings by Botny everywhere on Etsy over the past couple of weeks. Her shop is exploding with goodness right now! I think this pair is the most "me".
Sticker Set by SarahMcNeil

And last but not least, Sarah McNeil's wonderful sticker sets! Her illustrations are so charming. I'd like to send them to penpals when I write love letters.
Hope you enjoyed my Etsy treasures I found this week. Take care!

Friday Favorites.

Hi! Again, I'm sorry I haven't been writing as often as I should be. This week has been all about dealing with my new sugar-free diet instructed by my naturopath. It's been tricky! I miss eating cake! But, as I write this while eating my rye bread with hummus, and drinking a blueberry smoothie Robert made me... life is good. Here are some beautiful things I've found on Etsy this week!

JELLYFISH Tri Blend Tank by ZenThreads

Definitely need this for when the weather gets warmer. I'd love to wear it on a date to the Aquarium.
Zombie Leg Love Art Print by burntfeather

I've been a fan of Fee of burntfeather for many years. Her Etsy shop is one of my favourites. I'd die if someone got me this!
Ruffle Fashion Crochet Necklace by A Common Thread

This dainty necklace is so gorgeous. I'd pair it with a little black dress.

Raw Purple Amethyst Crystal Necklace by CAMPandQUARRY

One of my first purchases on Etsy was one of CAMPandQUARRY's necklaces. They are perfect!

3 Mermaid Cards by theFiligree

And the little girl in me loves these mermaid cards. I think it may be time to revisit my Hans Christen Andersen book of fairy tales.
